Can Islamic issues be discussed without the permission of the religious authorities?

However, while the non-Muslim does not have to seek prior approval to organize talks or seminars with regards to his religion, the Muslim citizen appears to have this added hurdle to cross in order to exercise his rights under Article 10 and Article 11 (1). Is this constitutional? Is this legal? I will not ask the question if this hurdle is consistent with the Quran since it is not (my humble view – stand to be corrected). – www.LoyarBurok.com

Pusing-Pusing MCA

After all that, MCA is now back to square one. We had the President sacking the Deputy. We then had the Deputy retaliating and demanding for an EGM. The President’s men also put in a few motions. It was narrowed down to 3 motions. They then fought it out on 10th October 2009. The President […]

The Perak Crisis: Keep Focused on the Real Issues

On 11 May 2009, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled (per Dato’ Abdul Aziz J) that since there had been no formal vote of confidence on the floor of LA, Nizar remained the rightful MB of Perak. Zambry appealed. The Court of Appeal unanimously reversed the High Court decision but it was some time before the three judgments were released. Two of them, those of Dato’ Raus Sharif and Dato’ Ahmad Maarop JJCA were released towards the end of June while that of Dato’ Zainun Ali JCA was released in early July.

The three lengthy judgments come up to some 240 pages in all and a large number of issues were canvassed and discussed. Dr Kevin YL Tan SJD previously commented on the correctness of the High Court decision and having already discussed the contradictions that arose from the judgments of Raus and Maarop JJCA feels it is timely to revisit the most salient issues in this case.

What is this 1 Malaysia camp at Kuala Dipang in Perak? If not for that unfortunate death of the 3 girls, many of us wouldn’t know of this camp. How can the Government even consider sending kids as young as that age to camps, to teach about this concept called 1 Malaysia, which until now […]

Stop the Repatriation of the Sri Lankan Refugees Now!

SUARAM’s urgent appeal on the plight of Sri Lankan refugees who complain they are being illtreated by Malaysian officials is reproduced below. Sri Lanka’s government has been accused of grave war crimes and humanitarian abuses. Despite that, it appears that the Malaysian government is assisting fficials from the Sri Lankan High Commission repatriate ethnic minority Tamil asylum seekers from Sri Lanka who fear for their lives at the hands of the Government of Sri Lanka. About 300,000 Tamils still live behind barbed wires in internment camps in Sri Lanka, unable to return to their homes since the end of the civil war earlier this year. Please respond to this urgent appeal by circulating the same, and sending the suggested letter of protest (at the end of the post) to the authorities.

In the Beginning… the MyConstitution (PerlembagaanKu) Campaign Trail

These past few months have been immensely hectic. The Malaysian Bar is extremely fortunate to have a pool of incredibly talented, young and energetic group of lawyers, pupils-in-chambers, and students working night and day on this Campaign. From the words “let’s move”, the action has been continuous, non-stop, and it has been difficult to keep […]
