There are many ways to ‘categorise’ porn – an infinite number of genres and sub-genres. There’s type of sex (S&M, gay, orgies), type of actors (teen, ethnic titles like “Big Nightsticks in Little White Chicks”), and so on.

Today, I will offer a guide that goes mostly by production house and directors. For those of you looking to embark on exploratory adventures into what there is out there, I hope this is a useful introduction.

The majority of material explored here is fairly mainstream – I’m afraid I have no expertise to offer with regards to pornography involving geriatrics, animals, excrement or the excrement of animals and/or geriatrics.

Even where the material gets wild, it’s within relatively normal confines (although of course, ‘normal’ and ‘pornography’ are kinda weird concepts to put together side by side).

Now, and this applies to every single article coming out this week by me, I haven’t taken the trouble to insert a whole lot of hyperlinks. All I can say though, is (and listen carefully), Google and Torrentz.com are your best friends.

Couples / Women-Friendly Porn

Let’s begin with the mildest stuff I can think of – what might be broadly called Couples Porn. I think the most prominent and prolific production houses within this genre are Vivid and Wicked. Adam & Eve are ok too.

These production houses produce a great number of titles that actually attempt to weave some semblance of a story around the sex scenes.

The quality of these stories vary, as you might expect. I can’t pretend I’ve watched all the stories of all the porn titles I’ve watched within this genre. Generally, at best, they are mildly amusing.

The sex is usually pretty straight up, and in it’s more boring moments pretty formulaic. Vast majority are one on one scenes, decent looking girls, a male actor from a pool of about 15 or 20 of the same guys, and about 3 positions preceded by oral sex both ways.

The stories cover comedy, particular theme/fetishes (Roller Derby girls, secret agents, pirates), and the like.

Once in a blue moon, there’s actually a standout. One that comes to mind by a pretty good director, Paul Thomas called Throat: A Cautionary Tale, which is a reimagination/reboot (the type that is so popular these days) of the classic Deepthroat.

At the risk of being made fun of, I daresay I actually found the drama compelling, and rather added to the enjoyment of the sex.

A few other semi-worthy mentions might include Kink (Wicked), Fade to Black 2 (also by Paul Thomas), the Lord of the Rings themed Dream Quest, and an older piece, Suite 18.

On the American side but on the other end of the spectrum, two other big houses that come to mind are Hustler (the infinite Barely Legal series) and Red Light District (which produced the enjoyable Sport Fucking), both of whom produce rather more hardcore, less fluffy material, but don’t offer a whole lot on the imagination front.

High end porn

A directorial style worth mentioning is that of Michael Ninn. Along with others like Andrew Blake, Ninn produces a fairly unique still of ‘high end’ visuals, employing very slick, very polished results on screen.

Some prefer the raw and gritty, which certainly has its place, but if you’re in the mood for something with a slightly artsy touch, Ninn is your man.

His style has a music video quality to it, a luxurious sensuality you usually have to pay a lot of money to achieve, creating an atmosphere of fantasy its easy to drink deeply in.

Classics like Latex established Ninn as something of an avant garde director back in his day, producing the type of porn pretty much unseen before – and I reckon there’s always something to be said for the unique.

European ecstasy

Let’s move on to Private, a European production house that has bitten off projects big and small – including rather epic productions like Cleopatra and the Tatiana series (set in the 19th century, and replete with opulent sets, etc).

There is no lack of tall, stunning Eastern European talent to keep the eye candy plentiful, all speaking with accents that you may consider either cute or fodder to make fun off.

Marc Dorcel is quite a prolific director, but I’m more of a Pierre Woodman fan. This interesting fellow has also taped a number of casting calls, which are a slight phenomenon onto itself. If these sex auditions are truly faked, they’re pretty good fakes (look up a video involving Pierre and Yasmine Fitzgerald [who I understand he later married], and tell us whether you think this one is a fake or not).

Pierre Woodman’s real talent however seems to be in either identifying or training some very passionate performances by his female talent. There is nary a shortage of screaming and thrashing about, which in my books = good.

There are a number of other interesting individuals and houses (like Evil Angel) worth exploring, but best not to use up everything in one article – there’s always tomorrow!
