[UPDATED with venues at Johor and Sabah, and the police’s response to the Vigil on 1 August 2010.]
Salam Perjuangan,
Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) would like to invite all concerned citizens to a concurrent, nationwide Candlelight Vigil in conjunction with 50 years of ISA.
The Vigil will be held on 1 August 2010 (8pm) at several parts of Malaysia including:
- Selangor – Dataran MBPJ, Padang Timur (opposite Amcorp Mall)
- Penang – Speakers Square
- Perak – Dataran Bandaraya Ipoh
- Kedah – Dataran Zero KM, Sungai Petani
- Kelantan – Taman Hijau, Jalan Sultanah Zainab (after Merdeka Field)
- Seremban – Dataran Seremban
- Sibu – No. 25, Pusat Tanah Wang, Jalan Perdada
- Kuching – Lots 468-469, Bangunan Al Idrus Commercial Centre, Jalan Satok
[Updated on 1 August 2010]
- Johor – Plaza Seni, Jalan Ah Fook (opposite City Square)
- Sabah – 1 Borneo Hypermall (front entrance)
We demand the Government of Malaysia to repeal the ISA as soon as possible as the barbaric and unlawful Act has existed in Malaysia for 50 years. The ISA is draconian and most importantly, it is against fundamental human rights.
Please join us together to fight the ISA and all other laws allowing for detention without trial! Together We CAN Bring CHANGE!
GMI will provide updates from time to time on the venues of the Vigils in each of the states mentioned above. Please bear with us.
For further information, please contact E. Nalini at 019 3758912 or 03 77843525.
Released (as edited by LB) by E. Nalini, GMI and SUARAM Coordinator
LB: It could be your son or daughter next held under the ISA. You have no right to defend yourself at a public trial and you may be detained for umpteen years on end. Jom LoyarBurokkers (are you one? if you think you are not, well you are NOW)! Onwards! (Wear your LoyarBurok ONLY teee to the vigil; if you don’t have one – order it like this or get it at the Vigil off the boot of a car. And be cool like that…)
[Updated on 1 August 2010] The police has warned that the Vigil is “illegal”. Is there such a thing as an “illegal assembly”; or is it an assembly without a permit? The police has challenged the rakyat, asking us not to exercise our constitutional right to peaceful assembly without arms – see here. What do we do?
