Who is a “public intellectual”? Hitchens explains.

In 2008, the top 100 public intellectuals in the world were listed. Why was no Malaysian included whereas they were?:

Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore

Anies Baswedan, Indonesia

Fan Gang, Hu Shuli, Minxin Pei, Wang Hui and Yan Xuetong, China

Ramachandra Guha, Ashis Nandy, Sunita Narain, V.S. Ramachandran and Amartya Sen, India

Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh

Aitzaz Ahsan, Pakistan

  1. 1. Khalid Ibrahim, Selangor Menteri Besar .. Why? Because of —

    (a) his vast corporate experience,

    (b) Transparency;

    (c) Wisdom;

    (d) Clear thinker

    (e) Moderately Progressive

    (f) Liberal with capacity to be more liberal;

    (g) Intelligent;

    (h) Rational;

    (i) Generous;

    (j) Absence of Arrogance…. modest; and

    (k) Action orientated.

    (2) Royal Professor Ungku Aziz — because he is very well educated, extremely intelligent, realistic man and not proud at all.

    (3) Justice James Foong — because of his impartiality, believes in the Separation of Powers, also makes very sound and daring legal decisions.

    (4) Still considering 2 more persons… when the time is right.

  2. 1. Prof KS Jomo- he is smart but underrated.

    2. Dr Mahathir- Yeah, not a popular choice but I think he is one of the smartest PM that Malaysia ever had. Of course his acts sometimes suggest otherwise.
