For your information Amina, Esperanto does not require native speaker or native born speaker. It is the second language recommended by UNESCO to protect the mother tongue. Its a simple matter of the State not getting involved in things better left to the parent(s) to decide. If the parent is comfortable taking the child through the book or giving the book to the child, presumably they have made an assessment of the child's character and intelligence to appreciate the subject matter. Interestingly, in Holland, parents are not given the right to teach about sex as the State takes the view that teachers would be best equipped to do that job as they would have been trained to impart that knowledge to a child. Such is the importance of the subject in Holland.

Asians generally get flustered when they see themselves in the nude. Hence many have sex in the dark. So I guess some quarters still get a bit shocked when they see their naked selves represented in a children's book. What can I say except how else do we explain to kids how what works? Bring in the stork again? Use the "When you're older, you'll know" line? And let them find out, unsupervised, through porn sites? I'd rather tell them what they need to know myself and use reals terms. No 'wiener', no 'little birdie', basically no couched terms because we have official names for those appendages! If we take away the mystery and stop making a big fuss, then children won't cultivate negative attitudes towards the subject of sexual reproduction. MYy take, anyway :)

We have totally the same issue over here and i am still in the process of going thru all the procedure for getting married… now i do not have issue with parents !!! i only have the problem with the goverment and for getting the documents ready for the marriage . !!! can you please advise if you succeed in getting married with the girl you wanted and how did you do it ???? i seriously need some help over here !!!
my story goes like this !!
I meet a french girl who is NON Muslim and i am a muslim from malaysia after being together for quite some time now we have decided to get married but there is a problem where she does not want to convert to islam and i dont want to force her to convert without knowing the religion !! in this case the marriage in malaysia is not possible because of its a islamic country and if a non muslim wants to marry a muslim then the non muslim needs to convert to islam ….
Now i am stuck in this procedure and i have very less time because we are planning to get married before end of march ….

I went to La Salle PJ and regularly shared my huge F&N bottle of orange squash with the whole class after PE class, as well as a stick of Dunhill during Geography class. My good buddy Ganesh and Chong Yin shared my passion for Man United, which led to many animated discussions on the previous nights Road to Wembley game.

Like you Alvin, I miss what we once were. Malaysia was actually a nice place to live in, where everyone accepted other people for who they are, no matter what colour their skin was, or which religion they profess to. Alas, that is no more. I can sense a deep sense of mistrust, jealousy, anger, frustration and downright agression towards people from other races, especially from my own people, Malays like me.

My sincere hope is that sometime in my lifetime, Malaysians will vote using their heads and ensure the Malaysia that we bequeth to our children and their childrens children will be a much better one than the one we currently live in, insyallah. Bless us all.

Alvin, I was born an army brat in 1968 and was brought up all over Msia. My eventful childhood kicked off at Madelein Kindergarten in PJ Old Town, then to Methodist Primary School behind the EPF Building on Jln Gasing. My brother went to La Salle, while both my sisters were Assuntarians. We eventually moved into our own home in SS2/77 circa 1977 where we were 1 of only 3 Malay families on our tree-less street.

SS2 back then had a community spirit where I didn't think twice about jumping into my Chinese neighbours compound to water their plants when they balik kampung to Kampar, and they reciprocated when we balik Batu Pahat. I was also the captain of my football team comprising of chinese dudes, and I guess my ability to curse them in cantonese got me the captains armband.

nope,not true. towards the end of his life, Carl Sagan still did not believe in the existence of a higher being. Atheist in foxholes do not pray before going into battle. In fact, a statement from an atheist who was in Afghanistan (he's American) sounded something like this, "I don't pray,my friends,they're religious,they pray before they fight,but I dont. I am an atheist myself so i find it nice to read about atheism in a website of which the majority of people who read it might not be atheist. We've always been swept under the carpet in the mainstream media in malaysia. I know of people who refuse to believe ho. I know some in the previous comments have debated about how organising atheist together is like forming a whole new religion but i think it's nice to be able to meet and talk to other atheist once in a while. It can get very lonely sometimes.

Congratulations on a post well done. I'd like to point out something though: in every nation, the media plays a role in advancing political views, in the US, Fox News, TIME, and the like are biased in their own way. Malaysiakini and Utusan play these same roles of juxtaposing different viewpoints, and I think rather than condemning this, it should be something to cherish. In fact, people should be aware of these very viewpoints, and thus decide for themsleves who to believe- that is what we call the fourth state- the media.
