Hello! My name is Marina and I am a volunteer with the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR). I’ll be writing a series of blog posts to promote the MCCHR’s most current project, Kafe Pusat Rakyat LB!

Kafe Pusat Rakyat LB is a hub of sorts, a place to relax, meet like-minded people and most importantly a place to share knowledge and inspire activism.

The kafe is a slice of heaven for me. I love spending my hours in just one place – reading over a cup of good coffee with a slice of delicious pastry, whilst having valuable access to an entire library of human rights books, documentaries, videos and other publications. All in one place!

At the kafe, I know the money I spend will go towards supporting the MCCHR and Rose Virginie Good Shepherd Centre*. I could even meet people who are happy to engage and discuss current human rights issues in Malaysia. Time and money well spent, if I can say so.

All in all, it’s my weekend treat away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

As much as the MCCHR hopes to share this amazing space with you and everyone else, it’s still an inevitable fact that it takes more than ambition to make a project work. The MCCHR is generated by the power of volunteerism and hence, depends on the goodwill of the community.

Dedicated volunteers have spent their time refurbishing used furniture, designing the menu, delivering home cooked meals to the centre, taking orders and serving customers. It never fail to amaze me how giving people can be.

You can do the same. If you feel like it’s time to redecorate or are planning to get rid of a piece of decent furniture that may suit the kafe, you can make a donation. We’d have a piece of you at the centre. A personal touch!

The kafe is only four months old, a baby and highly dependent on everyone to make it work. If you would like to contribute, please contact us at [email protected] to find out more about our wish list.

In the meantime, stay tuned for more kafe updates. The centre is already working with a few interesting individuals and organisations, helping to make this project a meaningful one. I hope you too would join the MCCHR community in any way you find comfortable.

Information on events will be coming up in the next few posts including an interesting story on how the MCCHR came into collaboration with the Rose Virginie Good Shepherd Centre in Ipoh. There are more exciting news to come, so keep all the love and support coming.

Thank you all so much in advance. I know that you are with us in spirit and this project is dedicated to all of you lovely people out there.

*The pastries at Kafe Pusat Rakyat LB are supplied by Rose Virginie Good Shepherd Centre. The latter offers a safe haven and temporary shelter for women and girls in crisis situations. The pastries are part of their Micro Enterprise Project, offering the women employment opportunities.

    1. Hi Joey, apologies for getting back to you super late. This place is in Pantai Baharu, Bangsar. Best landmark would have to be the Balai Bomba, Menara TM or Kerinchi LRT (if you're a commuter). Call us and we'll be happy to direct you!
