On 28 June 2012, the Safer Malaysia project first surfaced on LoyarBurok.

Since then, the project has picked up tremendous momentum, and now heads towards a massive candlelight vigil on Wednesday, 1 August 2012.

The vigil will be held on two levels.

The principal physical vigil will be at One Utama’s Central Park at 9.00 pm. The Safer Malaysia project team have obtained the consent of the park management to host the vigil there. The relevant notification under Section 9 of the Public Assembly Act 2011 was given to the police on 26 July 2012, with the police acknowledging the vigil.

Safer Malaysia will also be hosting a virtual vigil. We are imploring fellow Malaysians to light a candle at the same time as the physical candlelight vigil, wherever you may be, and upload a photograph on Twitter or Facebook, using the hashtag #SaferMsia or tagging us on Twitter or Facebook.

We hope to have thousands of Malaysians lighting a candle at 9.00 pm on 1 August, 2012.

The vigil is to support the idea and concept of a safer place to live in. Safer Malaysia demands that the country be made safer to live in.

In our article on LoyarBurok, Safer Malaysia proposed reforms and solutions which will take place in 3 stages.

Since the article, Malaysiakini and The Malaysian Insider have also featured Safer Malaysia. The two initiators of Safer Malaysia, Yip Huen Weng and Richard Wee were interviewed about the project on Astro Awani (Channel 501). That led to interest from Unit Inovasi Khas (UNIK) of the Prime Minister’s department and PEMANDU to explore ways of collaborating.

Safer Malaysia has also received dozens of emails from fellow Malaysians and held numerous meetings where they offered ideas and proposed solutions to try and reduce crime.

Yip Huen Weng also wrote an article, now on the Safer Malaysia website offering his views that the recent reliance on statistics by government agencies to suggest that the crime rate has dropped is a fallacy and ought not be propagated.

We now hope that this vigil will launch citizens towards a joint effort to demand a safer nation to live in.

Please come for the physical vigil. If you cannot, please take part in the virtual vigil.
