I think a memorable icon for readers of my generation is the scene in Basic Instinct where Sharon Stone crosses and uncrosses her legs.

Today’s article concerns explicit or semi-explicit sex on screen in films not widely considered to be pornography. We’ll cover a range, starting from basics like Basic Instinct (haha), move to a similar genre within TV series, and probably end by checking out some of the more “out there” examples.

The general criteria I think I shall use is that almost any title discussed herein must contain wankworthy scenes – scenes worth masturbating to. This of course is a subjective measure, but I hope it will do.

The Sliver pillar scene

With Basic Instinct and Sliver, Sharon Stone established herself as a queen of this genre. I think I found a scene from the latter most memorable, where Sharon and William Baldwin start of at a dinner date in which he dares her to remove her underwear (QED – quite easily done). Later, they head home, William invites her in, but she refuses, playing hard to get.

Halfway back up, Sharon changes her mind, stops the elevator and goes back downstairs. She finds the door to his apartment open, walks in and the place looks empty. She hangs around staring at the window.

William enters the frame behind her, butt naked, grabs her, throws her against the wall and well, fucks her silly. This is facilitated by her lack of underwear.

I haven’t actually watched this scene in very many years, but as you can see, it wasn’t hard to remember the details. It remains an inspiration to “get in the door, grab, fuck” aspirants the world over.

So many others – there’s the opening scene of Basic Instinct with the ceiling mirrors, Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas give a totally wankworthy scene in Original Sin, and maybe Demi Moore and Michael Douglas in Disclosure (giving what looks like a helluva blowjob).

Californication

Before we go into the next ‘level’ of films, let’s take a quick look at some TV series.

There’s Nip/Tuck with its playboy plastic surgeon that never seems to lack amorous trysts. Another feature of this particular series is its willingness to explore some pretty fierce taboos, including the one where Famke Janssen is having sex not only with her son’s friends, but apparently, with her son himself. Fun fun fun.

If you like your sex a little more medieval, I suppose you could try The Tudors. I have always thought this must have been the one real advantage of being royalty back in the day – looks like you could pretty much fuck whoever you wanted, Sultans and harems, etc. An time tested, fun fantasy to be sure. I haven’t watched a whole lot of The Tudors, but a little change of scenery is always fun.

One of the ‘classics’ in this genre would probably be Californication. The opening scene of the pilot seems to involve a nun and a blowjob, and it doesn’t slow down a whole lot. Of particular interest, also in the pilot, is one of the first girls David Duchovny is seen to be having sex with. This young girl, involved in a end-of-the-episode surprise, turns out to be none other than Madeline Zima.

Remember the youngest daughter in Maxwell Sheffield’s family, Gracie, in The Nanny? Yeah. Boobs.

Wild

Let’s take a look at a few other good outliers, starting with Secretary – an iconic film staring Maggie Gyllenhall and always-where-there’s-sex James Spader, involving S&M and domination elements in a relationship between a lawyer and his secretary. The film has all that kinky goodness you might expect, but surprisingly to some (but probably not to others), involves as well a great deal of tenderness in its story telling. It’s a very enjoyable film, including at some point a delectable scene involving a black wedding dress, a big tree, and some sturdy rope.

James Spader is also the star of Crash, a rather interesting film about people who get sexually excited by car crashes. As you can imagine, there’s some pretty weird stuff going on, and a lot of wreckage. The movie opens with James and his wife each having sex with other people, he then comes home to find her on his balcony, where they talk about their respective trysts before he fucks her from behind.

I had originally intended this to be a single article, but it looks like American films alone are enough to take up one slot. The next will be on all the fun to be had with non-American films.

To end though, let’s talk about Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. I can’t pretend I super enjoyed this long film as a whole, all though there was a strong sexual undercurrent that pervades the movie. Needless to say, the highlight of the film to me was the scene (one of the very best, bar none) in an opulent mansion that seemed to be dedicated to full on depravity in its extremes. Complete with occult rituals, the place was the rich and famous’ temple to the sin of sex, and Mr. Kubrick treated us to a sensory feast of delight by taking us through the intense orgy in the mansion room by achingly sexy room.
