KUALA LUMPUR: LoyarBurok, started by some lawyers and law students some six years ago as a blog which they dubbed to give sharp and witty commentaries on the state of the country’s social, political and economic affairs, now has its own resource centre.

Shanmuga K (sic), co-founder of Pusat Rakyat LB, said that with the setting up of the centre, they hoped to “gather, mobilise and empower Malaysians to win back the country for the rakyat.”

Indie bands – Barcode, Sounders, Lord Bobo’s Minions and MC Stiff – added colour to the opening of the centre with music carrying humanitarian and social justice themes.

The event at Jalan Bangsar Utama here yesterday also featured a Rakyat’s Wall for visitors to scribble their thoughts on the country.

The organisers also introduced a soon-to-be-launched voting education programme called UndiMalaysia, aimed mainly at young Malaysians who are naive about their voting rights.

The event also served as a recruitment drive for more “LoyarBurokkers”, whose number currently hovers around 200.

“It will be a resource centre to educate the public on constitutional, human rights and other bread-and-butter issues,” Shanmuga (sic) said at the launch of the centre, also called the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights.

Regarding the UndiMalaysia programme, he said: “We need Malaysians to look beyond a politician’s personality and vote based on local and national issues that impact them.”

Fellow founder Edmund Bon said they wanted to train non-lawyers to understand the importance of the constitution and human rights.

Bon, who worked on the Bar Council’s constitutional education programme, added: “We are exploring different ways to reach out to the community, including the rural folk, in the months to come.”

Besides running the website, the group had previously published a book on the Perak constitutional crisis and sold “freedom size” T-shirts.

Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) is a non-profit based in Kuala Lumpur with the mission of promoting active democratic participation and human rights awareness.

  1. Hi May I as a member of the public visit your centre? Is it a library – would I be allowed to borrow a book, for instance?

  2. That should read 'Take down 1 racist/nepotistic/corrupt MP or dun at a time by yourself. Or 111 if you a multimillionaire can afford it.' One at a time in context of the ordinary man candidates. Those wealthier should fund an army of independent candidates to end APARTHEID.

  3. Old hawks who can fly are needed for relating to the older demographic.

@andromeda needs a patron or sponsor to be a great MP. Poverty is the waste of many a great man. Now who has the heart to invite @andromeda as a comrade in arms? I know many who single handedly could fund 111 MP or Dun campaigns but stay put like statues even as the world passes them by. Probably paralyzed by fear of loss of face or mean spiritedness. ACt, and change the face of Malaysia, take down 1 racist/nepotistic/corrupt MP or dun at a time.

  4. Congrats to you all from a member of the poor public. I do not want to become rich but would throw in my efforts to make our malaysian society what it should be…..equal for all despite religion and race.

Can I mention these two words for the last time….am sick of hearing them as they are the dividers in ourgood society.

Please do not bring in those words when you start to educate the public which I think is one great, mighty, gallant effort.

I live in the vicinity, but am not sure where you folks have lodged yourself. Are you in Bangsar Utama Condo?

Making the public understand the Constitution should be uppermost in your educational agenda….

I hope that you have a successful journey in your efforts to bring Malaysia closer to being a huge melting pot of different races living in harmony.

All the best and good luck to you young blood hawks….go for it!

  5. @Kenny Soon

By running in your constituency as an independent candidate on the below manifesto :

    1) Freedom from Apartheid/Fascism

    2) Freedom from Religious-Persecution/Religious-Supremacy.

    3) Equality for all ethnicities and faiths in all aspects of policy, Law and Constitution.

BARISAN – Apartheid, Nepotistic, Corrupt (Ku Li and OTK may be the last BN men standing?)

    PAKATAN – Nepotistic, Corrupt

    3rd Force – Corrupt

    Independent Candidate – ???

Lets lower those election deposits from 15,000 to 15.00 Anyone else up to this INDEPENDENT'S MOVEMENT? If 111 or more candidates run in this manner to END APARTHEID, or end NEPOTISM/OLIGARCHY, Malaysia would be liberalized by GE13.

  6. I m a lawyer by profession. I have been reading the articles posted at LB website and quite fascinated with works at LB. How can I contribute to the people of Malaysia?
