KUALA LUMPUR, 31 July (Bernama) – The Malaysian Bar today invited the federal and state governments, academic institutions, NGOs and media organisations to join the MyConstitution Campaign.

Edmund Bon Tai Soon, chairman of the Constitutional Law Committee (ConstiLC), said they needed support to promote the campaign.

“For the first time in the history of the Malaysian Bar, the Bar Council this term (2009/2010) formed a ConstiLC to entrench constitutional study and promote constitutionalism as part of the Bar’s already wide-ranging initiatives in society.

“The ConstiLC has adopted a two-year Blueprint 2009-2011, which sets out the committee’s programme. Our core initiative is to conduct a first-of-its-kind aim of the campaign is to educate and empower the rakyat and create greater awareness about the Federal Constitution,” he told a news conference here Friday.

The ConstiLC’s vision and mission is to promote the concept of constitutionalism and the rule of just law; raise awareness of and educate the rakyat on provisions of the Federal Constitution and thereby to empower the rakyat; document and respond to constitutional issues that arise.

“Our mission is also to conduct research on matters relating to the Federal Constitution and State Constitutions and where necessary, make recommendations for constitutional reform. It is also to assist and advise the Bar Council on constitutional matters,” he added.

As part of the campaign, Bon said, the committee would embark on producing a series of people-service video advertisements on selected provisions of the Federal Constitution, publishing a series of pocket-size books on different parts of the Federal Constitution, hosting a series of awareness-raising programmes and publishing articles on the Federal Constitution.

He added that the focus of the campaign would be on explaining important concepts and themes of the Federal Constitution.

“I trust that this initiative will be of immense benefit to the people of Malaysia. Discussions on the finer details of the campaign have begun and the official launch will take place soon, expected in September,” he said.  — BERNAMA

Many a time the public are not aware of their rights eventough it is enshrined in the constitution. To be a developed nation we need developed mind.”

  2. This is brilliant and finally! The Bar Council must work hard to also ensure that Sharia Law is not dominant over Constitutional Law, including on conversion from Islam. Within current historical context, the Sharia law as influenced by Arabic/Taleban style is dangerously taking over many Constitutional Law, especially in regard to the modern and universal human rights of mass of ordinary Muslim's rights, especially of women/girls/gays and converts from Islam. The Bar Council must also fight for the rights of Malaysian Muslims who do not want to submit to such Arabic-Taleban Dark age Sharia Law, to be treated equally instead under the Constitutional Law as any other citizens! And that include fighting for the closure of the Islamic Dark Age prison/concentration camp-style of Islamic Rehabilitation Camps in Malaysia!

Maybe he wants to consider joining MyConsti Campaign and learn together with us :-) I'm saying this in a good way. It's an essential part of the learning curve of a man of his stature. And responsibility.
